affect timing indirectly. It has to do with the fact that the timing map points are referenced using a VE calculation, which is primarily based on MAS and RPM. If you offset the MAS info(while adusting your A/F), you will also make it use a different timing point in the map. Whereas the e-manage will allow you to directly change the timing. However, what I am unsure of is since the ECU uses a VE calc to determine engine condition, and the e-manage is a piggyback system that offsets the MAS to get the desired A/F, it will inadvertently affect timing when you screw with the A/F which will make for a very confusing day on the dyno. When you set your timing to what you want it to be and then change your A/F, you have now screwed up your timing curve. Extrapolating the exact ignition timing being used is possible, but it requires electronics probably not employed by the e-manage. It probably only shows the timing in a 2-d ofset rather than in a 3-D map showing exact timing points. There is no way for a piggyback system to easily determine what exact ignition timing is being used by the ECU as it would require the unit to monitor the CAS position and an ignition line (cylinder #1) and make a determination on when exactly it is being fired. Even if it were to give you an exact degree of timing, you would be allowed to offset it by whatever amount of degrees you desire, but it would only be properly set for that particular boost setting. If you went higher in boost, you would be likely be overly advanced and if you went to lower boost you would likely be overly retarded. What this means is that it will be difficult to tune because one change affects two systems and only maintains linearity when the engine is operted under the condition it was tuned within. How you will adjust for environmental conditions is still a mystery to me. I dont think the either have RPM limit adjustment or speed limit adjustment, or enrichment adjustments either. No ignition dwell duty would be possible with either of them.
